Individual psychotherapy therapy is a collaborative process between the psychologist and client that aims to facilitate change and improve quality of life. It is a process focused on helping people heal and learn more constructive ways to manage with the problems or issues within their lives.
It can also be a supportive process when going through a difficult period or under increased stress, such as death of a loved one, parental stressors, starting a new career or going through a divorce.
With individual psychotherapy, the verbal interaction is between two individuals: the psychologist (me) and the individual seeking help. We work together to identify and address the individual's problems with the expectation of making a positive change.
Individual psychotherapy can help people confront barriers that interfere with emotional and mental well-being, and it can also increase positive feelings such as compassion, self-esteem, love, courage and peace of mind. Many people find they enjoy the therapeutic journey of becoming more self-aware, and they may pursue ongoing psychotherapy as a means of insightful self-growth and self-actualization.
Individual psychotherapy can treat specific, diagnosable mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, in addition to everyday concerns, such as relationship problems, stress management, career ambitions, or other issues that may affect a person's mental well-being.
When specific issues or mental health conditions begin to cause distress and interfere with a person's normal activities, it may be time to seek therapy. Distress can manifest in the form of problematic beliefs, feelings, behaviors and sensations in the body.
As a psychologist, I can help if you are grappling with a life, relationship or work related issue or a specific mental health concern, and these issues are causing you a great deal of pain. My roles are to facilitate lifestyle changes, serve as a listening ear, help identify underlying causes of symptoms, and provide specific strategies or techniques for changing unwanted thoughts, behaviors or emotions. Ultimately, my goal is for us to work together to identify and address your fears and/or problems with the expectation of making a positive change. Through individual psychotherapy therapy, the people I work with gather tools to manage symptoms, alleviate stress, and face challenges.
