Marriage and Couples Counseling

Marriage counseling, also called couples therapy, helps couples of all types recognize and resolve conflicts and improve their relationships. Marriage counseling gives couples the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve and even argue in a healthier way. Through marriage counseling, you can make thoughtful decisions about your relationship and what you feel will ultimately be in your best interest.

Some couples seek marriage counseling to strengthen their bonds and gain a better understanding of each other.


Marriage counseling can also help couples who plan to get married. Premarital counseling can help couples achieve a deeper understanding of each other and iron out differences before marriage.


People in relationships seek counseling for any number of reasons, from power struggles and communication problems, to sexual dissatisfaction and infidelity. You can use marriage counseling to address many other specific issues, including conflicts about child rearing or blended families, substance abuse, financial problems and/or anger.


Marriage counseling typically brings couples or partners together for joint therapy sessions. Working with me as your therapist, you'll learn skills to solidify your relationship. These skills might include communicating openly, solving problems together and discussing differences rationally. You'll analyze both the good and bad parts of your relationship as you pinpoint and better understand the sources of your conflicts.


Successful marriage counseling depends on each partner’s motivation and dedication to the process, and couples can expect to become better listeners and communicators and to find new ways to support one another. Goals will be established by the couple. In order to reach these objectives, each partner must be prepared to acknowledge and understand his or her role in the relationship.


No matter the cause, distress in a relationship can create undue stress, tension, sadness, worry, fear and other problems. You may hope your relationship troubles just go away on their own. But left to fester, a bad relationship may only worsen and eventually lead to physical or psychological problems, such as depression and anxiety. A bad relationship can also create problems on the job and affect other family members or even friendships as people feel compelled to take sides. Marriage counseling can help you and your partner learn skills to solidify your relationship by learning how to communicate effectively, work collaboratively to solve problems and obtain the skills to discuss differences in a healthy manner.

Family Counseling

Family therapy is a type of psychological counseling that helps family members improve communication and resolve conflicts.  It may include all family members or just those able or willing to participate. The approach Dr. Giuliani would take as your family therapist will depend on your family's specific situation. Family therapy sessions can teach skills to deepen family connections and get through stressful times, even after therapy sessions are completed.


As a family therapist, Dr. Giuliani is available to provide psychological and emotional support, education and guidance for a variety of issues confronted by today’s families. Some examples of problems encountered by families include: difficulties getting along with each, problems with following the rules of the house, decisions regarding family planning, adoption, step or blended family issues, dealing with in-laws and other extended family members, adjustment to health related problems, coping with emerging alcohol, drug or mental health concerns, and many other concerns.


The goals of family therapy vary based on the needs of a particular family. Some common family goals are: to communicate and problem-solve more effectively, to better cope with changes within the family, to debrief and cope with traumatic experiences, to resolve problems and conflicts, and to create a more positive family environment.


Family counseling aims to promote understanding and collaboration among family members in order to solve the problems of one or more individuals. Ultimately, families can benefit from therapy when they experience any stressful event that may strain family relationships.
